Today we going to show you how to turn the makey makey into a midi controller.
The makey makey comes with a simple drum app but its not midi and doesn’t showcase it’s response or latency. So here’s a quick and easy way to use virtual midi to map keyboard characters into midi notes.
To set this up on the makey makey, you can wire up the keys in the back to any type of conductive material as triggers. So in this setup, I have them wired up to aluminum foil and a banana.
On your computer, you can download a free copy of vmpk that will allow you to map your keyboard characters into midi notes. When you have the makey makey hooked up to your computer, you can map the characters by going to the edit menu, and adjusting the keyboard map settings. You can also download my preset map to get you started.
Alright and there you have it, a quick and great way to turn makey makey into a midi controller. If you have any questions or if you want to share some of your jamming sessions, hit us up on Facebook, follow us on twitter and subscribe on YouTube, we’ll see you guys, next time.

Vote for our business to win one of six small business grants from FedEx, including the $25,000 grand prize.
The Business Story
Tired of spending countless of hours working at Starbucks? Our vision for the alternative is a cafe-esque retail space that looks and feels like an escapist vacation cottage (imagine an exotic hut on Richard Branson’s Island) complete with that writers desk in the corner. Yeah, basically a creative utopia. Infuse this cozy place with a shot of new age, 3D printing, technology (MakerBots) add a bar with brain food (acai bowls) and you’ve got the ideal cafe for thinkers.
Why Pixil Agency?
We should win this grant because we will enhance the experiences of people working remotely by creating a cozy conduit for thinkers, designers, and makers. As a grassroots initiative our motives are pure as we aim to enrich the lives of people in our community. For co/workers this will be a place that provides more than a place to sit with wifi and caffeine. The space will impart and give access to inspiration, motivation, influence, networks, new technology, and so much more.
What We Will Do
We are currently working with an interior design company to create the previously described look and feel. Once we arrive at our cost we’ll use the money to pay for materials and the build out of the space. Our aim is to make it desirable, comfortable, and inspirational.
IWearYourShirt is the poster child of personalization and thinking outside the box. They have a t-shirt for a business card for goodness sake! So when it came to personalizing the team’s brand new iPhone 5′s Jason (owner) knew exactly what he wanted to do, 3D print a custom case of course. Check out these one of a kind IWearYourShirt iPhone 5 3D printed cases.
I won’t spoil the article that Young Entrepreneur recently published about us but what I will do is give you a behind the scenes look at the dialogue we had with them. (Article)
First and foremost we are designers, entrepreneurs, and marketers not engineers. Up until recently, engineers have been the end user of 3D printing technology as it’s aided in prototyping objects within their area of influence. To give you an idea, NASA, is one of if not, the largest client for MakerBot. We’re obviously neither NASA nor any other company engineering a particular product to meet a single need.
With that, our outlook on 3D printing is very broad as we aim to introduce new products and solve problems in unforeseen ways. For example, engineers aren’t using 3D printing to create consumer jewelry for boutiques, we are. Additionally, we are introducing ways to leverage 3D printing to enhance brand experiences like printing client logos and 3D printing movie titles.
Our friends over at iwearyourshirt.com i.e. Jason _________ is auctioning off his last name for the year 2013. He will become Jason Skittles or something even more fun and creative by the time this auction is over.
Jason’s influence in social media as one of around 14,000 verified accounts on Twitter, his apparent creativity, and his diligence as an entrepreneur will likely net him a position as the backbone of a high powered marketing campaign for some Fortune 500 company in 2013. Is he the next Mike Rowe of Ford? Possibly…

We are proud to have done work for Jason and his company in the area of 3D design/printing, video production, multi-media support, and animation.
3D Printers, robots, musical instruments and art collided at the World Makerfaire in NYC. The Pixil team arrived with aspirations, hoping to gain insight and inspiration while visiting the newly founded Makerbot retail store in Manhattan. We’ll let the video speak to our experiences in the Big Apple.
Intricate details and spooky shadows
Just in time for Fall, we’ve been working on a Coral inspired design for candles that cast organic shadows that look cool and well, kind of spooky too. We’ve put up a version on thingiverse and have them posted up on our etsy store.
Coral on Coral action
Gearing up our jewelry display, featuring a branch like coral design that compliments our beach theme. Our designer Noe (@ecken) used a combination of ZBrush and Meshmixer to get really organic results. We’re working towards having our coral inspired line of jewelry in some local boutique shops here in West Palm Beach.
A handy tool for carrying wine glasses and bottles
Over the weekend we had an idea for making a holder for wine glasses and bottles. The idea came when we noticed servers could have a better way to carry around wine bottles and glasses. Pedro (@videopixil) quickly sketched up his idea and built it that very night. The result is a disk shaped slate with a hole in the center for the wine bottle, and two spiral slits on the sides to allow wine glasses to slide in and lock in place. We think it’s a great idea and a handy tool, we have it available for purchasing on our etsy store.
Custom iPhone Cases
What design? Which Color? Which model?
We think custom iPhone cases are a fun and unique way to express yourself. We made our team some prototypes and have fallen in love with the limitless opportunity for customization. We’re creating iPhone case art! If you want us to make you a custom iPhone case, fill out the form on Pixil 3D page and drop us a message.
Coffee Drip Tray
Best part of waking up, is a custom coffee cup (or tray)
Most of the time, when we set our coffee mugs down on our Keurig, we hardly notice the design on the drip tray. Well, we thought we could use a little creative inspiration for every morning. This custom drip tray was designed by Pedro (@videopixil) which features a voronoi pattern that looks awesome and stylish. You can be sure these will pop up on our etsy store page, as we brainstorm and model some killer designs. Stay tuned.
A lot of making going around lately! We’re busy wrapping up some projects but always make time for our biggest passions. Thanks for reading and be sure to keep watching this space!
